Capsules
Capsule, comes from the Latin capsula - box, chest or case, is a - dosage form consisting of a hard or soft gelatin shell containing encapsulate, which is one or more of the active ingredients. Capsules, unlike tablets, do not contain additional excipients (starch, clay, stearin, talc etc.). And it is due to the fact that when taking capsules, no extraneous substances get into the body, they have become so popular among manufacturers of biologically active supplements (BASs), nutraceuticals, natural dosage forms and products for vegans.
Currently, two main types of capsules are manufactured on an industrial scale: gelatin-based and cellulose-based capsules. All of them can be hard or soft and have different sizes, colours and even flavors (mostly used for children). Also one of the big advantages of capsules is their more convenient form for swallowing compared to tablets. Gelatin capsules are made from various animal parts (hooves, bones, tendons and connective tissue), which are boiled down in a special process to produce a gel-like mass, which is then filtered and sent to molds to produce the capsules themselves. Currently, most gelatin capsules meet kashrut requirements and can be used by Jewish and Muslim believers.
An alternative to gelatin capsules is the so-called vegetarian capsules, which are made entirely of cellulose. It is predicted that in the next 5-7 years, all capsule companies will switch to cellulose capsules instead of gelatin capsules.
From the patients’ point of view, capsules have many advantages over other dosage forms. According to studies, most patients find that capsules are much easier to swallow than pills, thanks to their smooth, slippery shells. In addition, the material of the capsule itself completely eliminates contact between the substance and the oral cavity, which eliminates the bitter taste and unpleasant odor that most active ingredients have. The capsules can also be made with a clear glossy coating, an attractive color for the consumer, which improves their aesthetic perception. Some types of capsules allow for opening and mixing their contents with food or drink.
